New changes for overseas students studying in Australia beginning in January 2025
If you’re thinking about studying in Australia, expect some changes around January 2025. Here’s what you need to know, why it matters, and how to confidently handle these changes.
Why the changes?
Australians value international students and their contributions. These modifications are intended to improve education quality, curb unethical behaviors, and strengthen the educational system. The government intends to create a safer and more transparent environment for overseas students by limiting enrollment, avoiding conflicts of interest, and suspending recruitment by providers under investigation.
Student Caps
- New Limits: To ensure balance, the number of overseas students per institution has been limited.
- Extra Room for Accommodation: Universities that provide appropriate student housing can raise their caps.
- Starting Date: January 1, 2025.
Protecting Students
- Stopping Fraud: Closing inactive educational institutions to prevent fraudulent courses.
- Pausing Recruitment: Schools under investigation are not permitted to recruit new international students until they are compliant.
- Proving Excellence: New institutions or courses must demonstrate a 12-month track record of providing excellent education to local students.
- Support for Temporary Visa Holders: Nearly $1 billion over five years for the Leaving Violence Program, which includes financial and legal assistance to persons fleeing domestic violence.
- National Student Ombudsman: Beginning February 1, 2025, they will assist students with complaints about their educational institutions.
Funding for Migration Reform
- $18.3 million allocation: For critical changes to the migration system.
- Worker Rights Education: $15 million to educate international workers on their rights.
- Data Matching Pilot: $1.9 million for a program that matches income and employment data to prevent exploitation.
Visa Changes
- The National Innovation Visa will replace the Global Talent Visa to encourage growth in important areas.
- Temporary Skill Shortage: Starting November 23, 2024, applicants will only require one year of work experience instead of two.
- Visa Fees: There is presently no change in visa application fees for overseas students, although this may change in the future months.
What does this mean for you?
As an international student, these changes are intended to make your study in Australia even better and safer. Continue to apply to universities as usual. IDP teams will keep you up to date on the latest information and will walk you through the adjustments once the new guidelines are confirmed and implemented.
